Oregon Women's Caucus for Arts and Suzan Mayer: A retrospective

Portland, Oregon. Throughout the month of January Evolve Gallery at the 100th Monkey Studio is proud to host two connecting exhibits: The Oregon Women’s Caucus for Art and one OWCA member’s retrospective, Suzan Mayer. The opening event is from 6-9pm on Friday, January 6th, 2012 and will hang throughout the gallery until January 27th, 2012. There will be live music by Amber Harlan.  The event is free and open to the public.
 
In the Lounge Gallery, the artwork of Suzan Mayer, a member of the OWCA, will be featured. This retrospective will feature her past and present work, which Mayer has used to deal with the “strains and complexities” of her life. Mayer stated, "I sometime feel I am balancing my physical, etheric and emotional bodies to each other.  It is calming, like meditation or prayer. In this state of mind. One allows patterns to arise from chaos. It feels very healing.  Hopefully you too will be able to "let go" and allow your rationality to engage your poetical self when you gaze at my art."  Mayer has lived in Portland all her life and since her health crisis her art has changed. She now describes her art as “dark and crunchy, using natural and human-made objects as well as conventional paints.”
 
In the main gallery, the artwork of several OWCA members will be featured. OWCA is a national non-profit association of professional women artists, art educators, art students and arts administrators. The national caucus was formed in 1972 as an outgrowth of the College Art Association. The Oregon chapter was formed in 1987 to reach out to women in all of Oregon and southwest Washington. The OWCA is committed to: education about the contributions of women, opportunities for the exhibition of women’s work, publication of women’s writing about art, professional equity for all, respect for all individuals without discrimination, and support for legislation relevant the their goals.

Integrating the Arts Throughout Your Curriculum

This series of workshops have been designed to help elementary school educators increase confidence and enthusiasm when integrating the expressive arts throughout their curriculum.  Art can be incorporated into any area of the educational curriculum and can be a valuable tool when supporting learning differences in students.  These workshops will offer techniques in using fine art media through experientials that can be applied in classrooms.  Each workshop is a weekend day from 9am-4pm with an hour break for lunch.  Participants are encouraged to pack a lunch, however there are many local restaurants in walking distance.
Cost: Workshops are $100 per session individually
or $700 for the entire series.
**All art materials are included in the cost.

I. Translation Through Representation
   Fine art experiential: Drawing Materials
   Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 9am-4pm
Metaphors are created so one can better internally visualize and compare to another concept from which one can draw his or her own conclusion.  Using the expressive arts in translation creates lasting learning and rules out memorization and short-term learning. Participants in this workshop will explore the use of fine art throughout their curriculum to translate lessons into active representation.  Participants will also learn the fine art properties of pencils, colored pencils, pastels, oil pastels and markers in the art experiential.

II. Assessment and the Arts
    Fine art experiential: Acrylic Painting and Color Theory
    Saturday, February 25th, 2012 from 9am-4pm
The expressive arts can be vital in assessing the progress of a student. The arts can broaden the view of a child's progress and provide the teacher with inner thoughts, concerns, dreams and hopes.  In this workshop, participants will explore the importance of student self-assessment as well as come away with strategies and tools to collect evidence to support youth with learning differences.  Sources will include Piaget and Lowenfeld.  Participants will also explore acrylic painting and color theory.

III. Imagination, Creativity and Technology
     Fine art experiential: Mixed media
     Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 9am-4pm
Creativity is innate in all human beings.  To create something suggests that something is created consciously and voluntarily.  In this workshop participants will explore how culture and resources may play into the creativity of all humankind.  The importance of process vs. product also will be investigated.  Participants will also learn applications to mixed media work, including collage, found objects, drawing materials, paint and more.

IV. Supporting Learning Differences Using the Expressive Arts
     Fine art experiential: Water soluble media
     Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 9am-4pm
Unique individuals have their own learning styles.  In this workshop participants will explore the goals of equitable education and experience methods to incorporate the expressive arts to support any student.  Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the wide range of learning styles.  Participants will also learn the range of water soluble media, including traditional tube watercolor, palette watercolor, watercolor pencils, watercolor sticks, watercolor markers and salt technique.

V. Communication, Expression, and Experience: Literacy and the Arts
    Fine art experiential: Zines
    Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 9am-4pm
The arts can be viewed as language.  Often individuals are able to find words for a thought in the process of creation.  In this workshop participants will look at the expressive arts in relation to visual, aural, tactile and kinesthetic properties.  Participants will come away with expressive art techniques to increase literacy amongst their students.  Participants will also discuss working in groups and the importance of pod learning.  Expressive art tecniques will include picto-spelling, poetry and zines.

VI. Math and the Arts
     Fine art experiential: Perspective
     Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 9am-4pm
One who unravels the mysteries of math could be seen as an inventor.  In math one must understand the relationships of time, space, plane, point and line.  In this workshop participants will explore how the expressive arts could be incorporated in solving problems using imagination and following the language of action and reflection.  Participants will also be instructed on basic perspective drawing and applications for elementary school aged youth.

VII. Science and the Arts
      Fine art experiential: Print making
      Saturday, June 30, 2012 from 9am-4pm
A naturalist approaches the natural world in a very similar way that an artist does.  Both question the world, use all their senses of observation, create notes and sketches, have an inquiring mind and both interpret or translate their findings.  In this workshop participants will explore methods to incorporate the expressive arts in the science curriculum.  Additionally, participant will learn the basics of print making.

VIII. Teacher Aesthetics
       Fine art experiential: Mixed media
       Saturday, July 28, 2012 from 9am-4pm
Aesthetics broadly refer to how an individual relates to their surroundings. In the art world aesthetics focus on the formal elements in art, which may include point, line, shape, space, value, color and texture.  These elements define the visual experience.  In this workshop participant will leave understanding the formal elements of visual art making as well as explore their own teaching aesthetics.  Participants will explore methods to engage student's senses to increase their successes in the classroom.

The conversation will focus on "Abstraction in Painting" and will trace abstraction from early cave art as a form of spirituality, some of the different forms of abstraction, moving through the late twentieth century. 
The influences, similarities and differences that make up the title of his talk 'Abstraction in Painting' will also be noted.  Brachman will also be available to discuss his own work at that time.
 
My Story and Human Solutions an amazing partnership.
In the open studio gallery spaces, affecting photographs from My Story will be featured.  My Story is a mobile arts organization that brings photography workshops to under represented Portland youth. My Story programs provide young people an opportunity to explore their lives through the lens of a camera, and strengthen their communities through the arts. My Story collaborates with community organizations to build programs that empower low-income and/or recently immigrated youth.  
Assorted pieces in the exhibition will include pieces from a collaboration with Human Solutions.  Human Solutions is the largest provider of services to homeless and low-income families in mid and East Multnomah County. 
 
The 100th Monkey Studio and Evolve Gallery strive to enrich artistic connections within the community by providing a space to create, view and discuss art.

Exploring Transitions: An Insight Oriented Fine Art Workshops for Adults Only

Exploring Transitions Leader: Beth Ann Short MA, ATR-BC Art therapy is for anyone.  In this on-going insight-oriented workshop, participants will explore fine art media with the support of the leader, while using gentle prompts, thematic suggestions or quotes to inspire the art process.  These meetings are designed for individuals looking for a place to explore their own creativity while also engaging in a supportive community atmosphere.  Expect warm-up art projects, discussion and reflection on art pieces and process.  Art pieces will be completed within each meeting.  Media to be utilized may include but is not limited to all drawing materials, collage, paint and found objects. Mobilize Some Monkeys 

At The 100th Monkey Studio we believe that creativity is contagious! In this video you can see how one creative thought can spark a change that grows and expands the more it is shared!  We believe that this creative thinking can save lives.. ok, well at least it can change lives for the better!  We hope our Mobile Monkey Van will have this same affect as it helps Art(s)cool PDX spread some contagious creativity!

What is the Mobile Monkey Van Anyway? The Mobile Monkey Van begins as a collaborative art project that will convert a boring old van into a mobile piece of art. Using both an open call for art AND art from you, the funder, we will cover our van with 100 Monkeys. This project will grab attention and draw people to seek out information about Art(s)cool PDX. 

Our project has one mission; bring more awareness of the need for arts & sciences education in the Portland Metro community and beyond!

Our campaign has three goals:
1. To raise the funds needed to acquire the Mobile Monkey Van
2. To create the call for art; then to design and install the art/graphics on the Mobile Monkey Van
3. To acquire the organizational materials needed to carry supplies (we already have all the supplies we need!)

Art(s)cool PDX and The 100th Monkey Studio are working in conjunction to create a successful and flexible arts and sciences enrichment program accessible to all. In order to find success with this program we need a way to bring the program, supplies and teachers to outside locations. The Mobile Monkey is the answer!!

This van is NOT for transporting students of any kind.

Art(s)cool PDX will be using the van/mobile art piece to travel around Portland and share our creativity! Utillizing our mad collaborative, organizational and administrative skills we intend to spread creativity all over town!   It's all about arts & sciences education for everyone wrapped up in a mobile, collaborative piece of art!  WATCH our video and you will see how mobilizing monkeys and sharing creativity can SAVE the world!!!!

Evolve Gallery News

Joy and I are approaching our 5th Anniversary in the studio.  This Friday we will celebrate with a special reception titled Honors that will hang for only 2 weeks, quite possibly less since we are selling the pieces off the walls.  This exhibit showcases many local and national artists who have been involved since the begining and have given their piece to be sold to benefit the Artist Scholarship Fund.  100% of the proceeds will be dedicated to providing creatives of all age's access to art and art therapy services.

 

We also have undergone another change and have decided to refine the gallery's vision even more naming it Evolve Gallery.  Joy and I both feel that the vision of the gallery had begun to stray from our original path.  The refining of the mission became vital as we approached our fifth year.  In contrast to traditional galleries, our gallery will continue to provide a place to honor the expressive arts AND the art process.  The future brings exciting partnerships with community organizations, group showings and regular openings. 

 

Lastly, I am so pleased to report that I have returned to the role of Curator in the studio.  I will continue to practice art therapy and teach fine art, but have been able to let go of other studio duties.  This has allowed me to come back to this post that I realize I really did miss.  I look forward to the future of  Evolve and providing opportunities for education, empathy and appreciation for the creativity in all of us. 

 

We have already made more physical changes in the studio.  Come and see this Friday!  We have increased the size of our Open Studio Gallery and more!  Hope to see you soon.

Evolve Gallery @ the 100^th Monkey Studio

As the 5^th anniversary of the 100^th Monkey Studio approaches this September, founders Joy Leising and Beth Ann Short enthusiastically announce the refining of the gallery, now to be known as Evolve Gallery in the 100^th Monkey Studio.  The founders see the gallery as following the open studio approach and the studios mission with the gallery’s focus on continuing to provide a place to honor the expressive arts and the art process, in contrast to traditional galleries.  “While we see this as something we were already doing, the gallery mission may aid in defining what we do in the eyes of the Portland art scene.  We plan to continue to partner with various community organizations, exhibit group showings and host regular openings,” said Short.

September’s opening, Honors, scheduled for September 16^th, 2011 will not have an open call for artists, but will be the studios opportunity to honor those who have been supporters the past five years.  A large variety of local artists will be represented and many pieces will be available for purchase on the spot.  Proceeds will benefit the studios Artist Scholarship Fund, which through generous gifts continues to provide creatives of all age’s access to art and art therapy services.

Hello summer!

I am feeling the shift in my schedule already.  This week I am hearing lots of summer planning happening with our camp program.  Nate Braun, our Summer Arts Program Coordinator is brainstorming and scheduling.  All the youth summer art camps sound AMAZING!

This week we have an art opening for our Mapping Show.  From the press release:

Portland, Oregon.  On June 17, 2011 The 100th Monkey Studio will host an opening event for the summer group exhibition, Mapping. The opening will take place from 6:00-9:00pm and is free and open to the public. The show will hang in throughout studio from June 17 – July 31, 2011.  
 
The artwork on display in Mapping imbues an individual concept of mapping and memory, focusing on relationships between artist and environment. Travel is an inspiring gift that fuels awareness, and it inscribes topological perspectives on the artist in the form of questioning. What is meaning? What is perception? What is context? Shifts in social constructs, transportation, nostalgia, and elements of surprise are celebrated in this summer show.
 
During the month of June, the 100th Monkey Studio will host an array of events and classes that include a collage open studio and Maps, a weekend workshop taught by Beth Ann Short, MA ATR-BC, on July 16 and 17. I am also excited to be teaching a series of workshops this summer mentioned below in earlier posts.  These workshops are designed for anyone, but in addition to an art experience participants will explore some insights relating to the self.  These workshops would also be helpful to any expressive arts therapist to use with clients in their own practice.

In June, in the mask making workshop artists will create masks based on traditional inspiration.  Participants could call on a symbol/animal from their family of origin tree or a creature that is important to them personally to develop into a mask for decoration.  The process will be using forms and plaster gauze strips that will be primed, painted and decorated.  A wide variety of media will be on hand to choose from.

In July I will be leading the Mapping & Charting Life, a workshop on using the metaphor of maps in the art process. Participants will create two pieces of art using a layered mixed media approach.  Some ideas of art content could reflect past, present or future personal journeys or life experiences.  I am providing a wide variety of media, but participants may also bring copies of personal photographs or other personal collectibles to add to their work.   

In August, I will be leading the Boxes- Dioramas workshop.  Participants will create a piece of art using a wooden box or drawer as their container and working in the assemblage style.  Artists will create an environment that relates to one specific item/object that they bring to the workshop.  This class always goes too fast for me and I always enjoy the story telling that happens amongst the group.

Masking Making Leader: Beth Ann Short MA ATR-BC Traditionally masks have been worn on a persons face for protection, disguise, performance or possible entertainment.  In this weekend workshop participants will explore the decorative art of mask making using plaster gauze to create a base and then decorate in the manner of their choosing.  Additional materials provided for decoration will include acrylic paint, fabric, fiber, feather & much more. Adult class June 25 & 26 Saturday 11am - 4pm Sunday 12pm - 4pm Cost: $185 + $15 materials fee REGISTER ONLINE FOR A DISCOUNTED RATE HERE ***** Mapping & Charting Life Leader: Beth Ann Short MA, ATR-BC In this weekend workshop participants will create 2 pieces of fine art using maps and additional mixed media.  Participants will choose between self maps, location maps, family maps or historical maps as their inspiration.  Participants may also bring color copies of personal photographs or other personal collectibles.  Materials provided will include acrylic paint, assorted drawing materials, fiber, epherma, collage adhesives and more.  Adults only.  July 16 & 17 Saturday from 11am-4pm Sunday 12pm-4pm Cost: $200 + $15 materials fee REGISTER ONLINE FOR A DISCOUNT HERE ***** Boxes- Dioramas Leader: Beth Ann Short MA ATR-BC In this weekend workshop participants will create a piece of fine art using wooden boxes/drawers and additional mixed media.  Participants will create an environment that relates to one specific object that they bring to the workshop.  Inspiration may include memories, vacations or milestones.  Materials provided will include acrylic paint, assorted drawing materials, collage, fiber, epherma, adhesives and more.  August 13 & 14 Saturday 11am - 4pm Sunday 12pm - 4pm Cost: $200 + $15 materials fee REGISTER ONLINE FOR A DISCOUNT HERE To find out more information about art therapy or the 100th Monkey studio please call 503-232-3457 *Beth Ann Short MA, ATR-BC comes from the Great Lakes region, living in both Michigan and Ontario throughout her youth. Short attended Alma College for her undergraduate degrees, double majoring in Art and English.  Short has a Masters in Art Therapy from Marylhurst University and is a nationally registered & board certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) with the Art Therapy Credentials Board and a member of the American Art Therapy Association.  Short also sits on the ATCB Credential Committee.      Short has worked in an array of community mental health settings as a QMHP, including: medical, outpatient, inpatient, juvenile justice, school-based settings and with at-risk youth.  Short has worked with groups, couples, families and individuals. Currently Short has a small private practice, provides in-service presentations, sits on panels to inform the public about the benefits of Art Therapy, teaches and also makes her own art.

What is Art Therapy?

Are you interested in the field of art therapy, but don't know what it's all about? This interactive talk will answer any questions you might have. Short will discuss a brief history of Art Therapy, clinical theories, properties of art materials, as well as discuss the importance of having a Master's in Art Therapy when using it in mental health treatment. Short will also cover the education process, credentials available, ethical use of art therapy and job hunting.
